What did you do / are you going to do / are you doing now?

Its half way through earth hour in Melbourne Australia. Big stuff going on with plenty of effort at reduced energy consumtion. Are you going to do anything at home tonight to reduce your consumtion while we are in Earth Hour?

Or do you fit in with the skeptics that are slowly being shown the door....?

Every little bit helps!

  1. Clean the frowns of sad people's faces.

  2. This is a moronic idea and if anyone sets their house on fire when they knock over a candle, lit when they turn off their lights, they should sue the idiots who came up with it.

I completely support energy conservation because I am a miser but these kinds of stupid stunts accomplish nothing.

  3. well, for 1 thing

ur not supposed 2 have ur electronics/electricity except the fidge lol

    on rite now

and i havent turned any lites on since 8pm but my parents doesn't really care

at least i did my part 2 the world!!

    so yeah...

  4. I've chosen not to procreate (which would otherwise, potentially increase my environmental footprint by a factor of 100 or more before I die). I don't need to participate in "Earth Hour"!

  5. i will be watching TV with my lights on and the heater also, since it will be dark out and cold. i whole heartily support worth while things to bad this isn't worth while just a bunch of feel good nonsense that the left likes to indulge in. they will waste more money and energy to promote and report on this than they will save by turning off their lights for a hour.

  6. I sat in my room, in the dark, and talked on the phone to my friend, who was also in her room, in the dark. That was my earth hour. lol

  7. I can't think of any greater stupidity than turning off a 60 watt light bulb for just 60 minutes and thinking you're making some difference.

I guess if you're someone who doesn't do much to solve problems, something that makes you feel as if you care is the next best thing.

What color ribbon do you hang on your car to tell others you care about so-called "global warming"

  8. I want to see just how fast I can make my electric meter spin while driving my SUV in circles on my lawn!

  9. If you really want to make an impact, you should organize an effort to eliminate your consumption for life. Instead of "Earth Hour" call it Earth for Life. Stop driving your car, don't heat and cool your house, don't use your computer, don't buy products that require energy to produce, just go totally "green". One hour just makes you feel good, then you are right back to being part of the problem.

  10. I did the same thing I do every night at that time.  I turned out the lights and went to bed.

I did my part!  Now I can look down my nose and sneer at every one else!

  11. I don't have any lights on.

  12. One hour makes no difference to the world if you go back to living in a modern fashion. People need to turn off the light and keep them off. One other option that would be better than Earth hour is change your lights day. Instead of using inefficient incandescent light bulbs, switch to mercury laden florescent bulbs that are energy efficient. Another good Idea would be to turn off your computer that uses approximately (based on avg system power) 400 watts of electricity or in other words 4 100 watt light bulbs worth of energy. Just a couple of thoughts, now go back to your cave man and remove progress from your mind.

  13. Hey I'm in Sydney...my family switched all the power off in our house, lit some candles and read our tarot cards on the garage floor. Weleft the lights out for some time after the hour. It was fun :) I was so glad it went global!

I've noticed a lot of people saying it is pointless to do earth hour but I don't think so- one hour where people worldwide put their thoughts and actions into making a difference. It doesn't seem like much but with everyone joining in it really is.

People may go back to being part of the problem, but people may also realise how good it made them feel and do little things everyday to help along with earth hour.

  14. Hey Big Ray!   We've been turning appliances off at the wall for quite a while, instead of leaving them on "standby".  Tonight I prepared and ate my meal by candle light, which is much softer and gentler than electric.

Of course we conserve water as much as possible too, and recycle everything that can be recycled.  Our guinea pigs eat the vegie scraps and their leavings go on the garden. There are many other changes I'd like to make but can't as I don't own the property and don't have the funds anyway.

As far as possible I buy local produce to cut down on "food miles", and I plant water-wise plants, many indigenous, in my garden. I really enjoy learning about these things and seeing how the efforts of a few ppl can make visible changes.

EDIT: We're progressively changing over to efficient light bulbs too!

  15. Yes iam... going to cut all my lights out and my computer ect... I think it is a cool idea to get everyone invloved!! Total fan.

  16. here in the uk i have heard little about earth hour, infact i only discovered it when i logged onto google half an hour ago

  17. what the f*ck? i dont give a f*ck. thats all d**n bullsh*t.

  18. Lets see, you know, we are spending a lot of time on the Internet answering these and other questions. I wonder how much electricity we are using by just discussing this today. Besides the PCs, monitors, cable/DSL modems, speakers and other peripherals, it takes energy to transmit these answers all over the world using routers, switches, servers, security filters and fiber transceivers. Makes you think, are we using more energy to help reduce energy???

  19. We turn everything off as often as we can...that should be part of everyone's daily routine.

  20. I see it much the same way as a one day boycott of gas stations. Without long term change, it's nothing more than a symbolic gesture.

  21. Do people actually think about the fact that when people do switch on there power  after the hour that  there will be a power surge & may use more power
