Even though Venus is farther from the sun then Mercury, Venus's surface is hotter than Mercury's. This is because Venus

a very weak or non-existent magnetic field

has an extremely old crust with volcanic features

rotates from west to east instead of east to west

has a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that traps the sun's heat

The constellation that contains the "pointer stars" used to locate Polaris is

Canis Major

Orion

Ursa Major

Cassiopeia

A light-year measures

time

speed

energy

distance

An asteroid's brightness may change as it rotates because it

has an irregular shape

is between Mars and Jupiter

is solid

has a circular orbit

Describe the three types of visible spectra that astronomers observe, and the conditions that produce each type of visible spectra

  1. 1. has a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that traps the sun's heat

    3. distance

    4. has an irregular shape

i only know the answer to these

  2. I'll try. It's summer....

    1) Constellation of the whata what whata?

    2) A light year measures in Distance

    3) Probably (I'm guessing with the most logical one)..hm, I would say irregular Shape.

I just finished my freshman year, I had physical science, didn't learn much. So I can't help you with the last one!

  3. Ok, I'll try 1. a.Venus has a very weak, or non-existent magnetic field, b. Venus has an extremely old crust with volcanic features, c. Venus rotates from west to east instead of east to west and last but least:d. Venus has a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that traps the sun's heat.  Therefore all of the above are true about Venus.  However, I feel that if I had to choose just one it would have to be # d.

    2. c. Ursa Major, not sure about this one, due to the fact I'm "weak on the constellations".

    3. a.time, b.speed, c.energy, & d. distance.  I believe they all have to do with what a light-year measures.  However, a light-year deals with the distance one thing is from another.

    4. a. has an irregular shape, b. is between Mars and Jupiter, c. is solid, & d.  has a circular orbit.  All of them are about asteroids.  However if I had to just choose one it would have to be # d.

    5.  Infared, x-ray, visual light.  Used on all the telescopes.  Each or the galaxies, or anything in space, for that matter, produce rays that can be seen via each of these types of material.  ie. Hubble (visual light), Chandrea (x-ray), etc., etc.

  4. 1.  Thick carbon dioxide atmosphere

    2. Ursa Major (this is the Big Dipper)

    3. Distance

    4. Has an irregular shape.

    5. There are definitely more than three....astronomers observe them all..  But the most common are:

    Radio (long-distance)

Infrared (Planets give off these frequencies)

Visible (To detect star temperatures, and to see closer what we see)

  5. 1. Thick carbon dioxide atmosphere

    2. Ursa Major

    3. distance

    4. None really fits.Irregular shape is probably right.

    5. Continuous, absorption, emission. See this page for conditions

  6. 1) thick (95X that of Earth) carbon dioxide atmosphere

    2) Ursa Major (Merak and Dubhe)

    3) distance (roughly 5.886 trillion miles=1 lightyear)

    4) irregular shape

    5) absorption, emission and reflection.  Depends on the temperature of the object and whether it is gaseous or solid, among other things.
