  1. This is because as part of the deal, American Airlines had to pay TWA $500Million and take on $2Billion in TWA liabilities. If you also factor in that later that year (9/11), the Twin Towers came down and the airline industry saw revenues plummet, it was certainly a lucky/good/wise move...


  2. American does not operate any A320 family aircraft that TWA had on order (A318).  It was incompatible with the American fleet.

  3. American didn't buy TWA...they bought airplanes and related assets.

    TWA just surrendered their certificate and went out of business.

    Besides which, AA had just made a major commitment to Boeing products, and had learned during the Bob Crandall expansion years just how expensive fleet diversity really is.

  4. American did not want the Airbus airplanes that TWA had on order.
