to estimate the height of a mountain above plain level, the angle of elevation to the top is 32*. one thousand feet closer, the angle of elevation is 35*. estimate the height of the mountain.

OK, draw a right triangle with the vertical side being the mountain height and the 32 degree angle being opposite it.  Draw a triangle inside it using the 35 degree angle taking off from the horizontal leg 1000 ft in from the 32 degree angle.  We will call the mountain height h and the distance in the first reading d

    Tangent of the angle = opposite/adjacent

    Tan 32 degrees = h/d

    Tan 35 degrees = h/(d-1000)

    you have to unknowns and two equations, solve for d in the first and sub it into the second and solve for h
