ECB mulls a reduction in County Championship games – Cricket News Update
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is mulling over the return of 50-over game to the county circuit at the cost of county championship games.
After a review of English Domestic Cricket by David Morgan, former Chairman of the English Cricket Board, the Board has been advised to consider a reduction in the number of games in the County Championship season to a total of 14, while incorporating more
50-over and T20 matches.
David Morgan, the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707 has suggested the return of 50-over
matches to the Domestic circuit of England, meanwhile raising the number of Friends Life T20 matches from 10 to 14.
Speaking on the importance of 50-over cricket, Morgan stated that the financial benefits from 40-over matches are not substantial enough to ignore the 50-over format, which is the standard of International games.
"I am convinced that there are no substantive commercial benefits evident from a 40-over format in comparison with the 50-over format…I have therefore concluded that the board should adopt the 50-over format from 2014,” said Morgan.
At present, each County side is scheduled to play 12 Clydesdale Bank 40 fixtures in a season. The CB40 games are 40-over matches but keeping in view the importance of 50-over One Day International matches, Morgan has urged the board to bring the format back
to the county cricket.
The ECB Chief Executive http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-G-Collier-c52800 praised Morgan’s recommendations and agreed that the board should introduce 50-over cricket in the domestic cricket.
"The board was highly impressed with the diligent consultation and findings presented by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 goal of mirroring success in the Test and Twenty20 formats at the forthcoming World Cups, the format
of ODI cricket must be introduced within domestic cricket from 2014,” he added further.
The ECB chief executive said that the board has unanimously endorsed Morgan’s Review comments and will soon seek recommendations on how to achieve the cutting down of county championship matches.
