Primary succession is described as the establishment of plants on new land where no soil or vegetative life existed previously. How would life begin on such a piece of land and then progress into the next stage?

  3. The area is first colonized by algae, bacteria, protists, etc.  When these things die, organic matter builds up and eventual a soil layer forms.  After a long time vascular plants can start developing and so on.
