EEEEBAY QUESSSTION!?

Okay, so if theres something on ebay that i want i know you place a bid but like how does the whole thing work? ive never used it before and my dad says i have to find out how it works? Also, when you place a bid lets say its like 5 million dollars okay and then another person places a bid for like 7.5 million can you replace another bid for 10 million?
