Question:

EFI service (clean injectors)?

The Toyota dealership says one of my fuel injectors aren't firing properly, and wanted to charge me $90 for an EFI service. It's an '03 Corolla with about 73,000 miles. Would something along the lines of chevron techron fuel system cleaner or BG 44K work almost as good as having to get the injectors clleaned at the dealership?

  1. Justin, The Toyota dealer is going to clean your injectors by connecting directly into the fuel rail with an additive. By using a pressure flush the technician is able to fully clean the injectors and fuel rail at the same pressure as the fuel pump.

Using an in tank additive such as Techron, the fuel pump does pick up and send it into the fuel rail, but it isn't consistent. It takes at least a tank of fuel before the additive is run through the injectors.

The technician can complete his flush in about an hour. Depending on the type of machine he/she uses, he can test the flow of the injectors when he is done

$90 is an excellent price for this.

  2. take a stethoscope to ea. injector( multi-port)and see if it makes a ticking sound or a timing light to the throttle body injector ( tbi) and look for off pattern spray cone ,it will tell you if you have a leaking injector

They work great IF there's even a little fuel flow.  If it is completely blocked, then you need a new injector.

In your car, you should run a bottle of fuel injector few time a year (at least just before the emission testing).  They really work.

    Good Luck...

  4. Putting an additive in your tank wont un clog an injector. Have the shop do it professionally.
