  1. This equation states that mass and energy are interchangeable. Mass can be converted to energy, and energy can be converted to mass. Some say that energy is simply fluid mass, and mass is frozen energy. Such are analogies.

  2. There was a good show on PBS NOVA a while ago.  This article explains it a little bit.

    And a much better version on Discovery Science Channel.  A short clip here, mostly about Relativity, but they are related topics:

    Here's a funny explanation:

    And a NY Times Science article:

  3. The energy in mass = "the mass" x the speed of light squared

    example:

    1 pound has a mass of

    1/32=  0.03125 slug

    0.03125 slug = 0.456 kilograms

    the speed of light = 299,792,458 m / s

    If all this mass was converted into energy

    E=Mass x C^2

    Energy =0.456 kg * (299,792,458 m / s)^2  = 4.09 × 10^16

    joules

    Alot of enregy! Big bomb!

    How long could I run my 1000 watt toaster on this much

    energy:

    4.09 × (10^13) seconds = 1,296,070  years

  4. E = MC2 means

    Energy = Mass X Velocity of light squared

    The velocity of light is somewhere around 2.88 X 10^8 m/s but it is rounded to 3 X 10^8 for easier usage.
