  1. EMF does stand for electromotive force in electronics engineering (also known as voltage), but in the world of ghost hunting it is more recognized as an acronym for electromagnetic field.  There are conjectures that EMF is correlated either with (1) induced illusions of ghosts or (2) the presence of actual spirits. While neither one of these ideas is more than conjecture, at least (1) is scientifically plausible.

  2. No, not in the slightest.  Ghost hunters have carry an EMF to add to their apparent professionalism and to further distract from the fact they don't know what they h**l they're doing.

For example, EM fields have never been shown to have any sort of connection to the presence of anything paranormal.  why carry a meter of any kind, the use of which neither validates nor denies the existence of that which you are searching for?

  3. Dude, be honest, when are you ever gonna see a ghost.

I think EMF would affect ghost sightings as much as filling your pants with spaghetti and flinging tomato sauce at every wall.

EDIT: sorry, didn't realise that this was in the paranormal section, thought it was physics or something. Think my answer still holds water though.

  4. EMF stands for electromotive force, i.e. voltage.  There is no such thing as a ghost, and anyone who thinks to have seen one is mistaken.

  5. Well, after reading TR and PD. I have nothing to say.

  6. Like everything else in paranormal research, it's open to debate.

98% of the time, EMF is caused by unshielded wiring or some other man-made source. However, when you encounter an EMF fluctuation with no apparent cause (i.e., a 35mG reading outdoors, 50 yards from the nearest power line or electrical outlet) *in addition* to other activity (EVPs, anomalous photos, etc) then it can be argued that perhaps there was a link.

It's a very small percentage that can't be explained, but it's still a percentage.

Problem is, EMF can make you feel drained, paranoid, out of sorts, etc. Pretty much the same feelings that people associate with seeing/feeling a ghost. So does the EMF make you FEEL like you're seeing a ghost? Or is the ghost causing the EMF?

It's a chicken or the egg argument, one that will no doubt  have skeptics and believers alike sniping eachother for years to come. ;)

  7. No.Ghosts run on energy and that is energy.

    ...

But now that I think about it in Ghost Hunters when they get EMF's they usually can't get video...hm...

  8. Large amounts of EMF, such as houses with old wiring, are commonly thought to repel spirits.  And EMF meter senses rough disturbances in the magnetic field, a phonomona commonly associated with ghost activitiy (ghosts are different than spirits, remember).

A slight increase in your EMF reading, often accompanied by a decrease in temperature, is a pretty good indication you have identified a ghost.

Strong EMF discharges from electric connections affect the human nervous system, makes you feel 'like someone is watching you'. Therefore, it's always best to cut power to a location if you are investigation. That way there is no confusion.

A weird side story. For some reason, going to an active location will drain batteries. All experienced ghosters take lots and lots and lots of spare batteries for this reason.

    Happy hunting

  9. EMF's effect people in different ways. One theory that is out there is that spirits/ghosts are more prone to stay in a place that has moderate to high levels of EMF. They can draw off of that energy and manifest. Like I said that is one theory...

In high doses EMF's can be really unhealthy. They can make you see things that are not there, black spots, dizziness, neusea, headaches, make you feel like you being watched....etc.

And EMF does not stand for Electromagnetic "FORCE"!!

  10. Not nearly as much as Christmas affects Santa sightings.

    .

  11. An EMF detector is only for validating electrical phenomenon that should not be present. The entity itself creates the electrical disturbance picked up by the detector.

  12. Sort of. It's usually called electromagnetic field. The theory is that ghosts affect emf, and that high emf can have an affect on the brain, implying some sightings are a delusion of the mind exposed to high emf readings which causes that brain to see or sense paranormal activity. I'm not sure how well validated some of this is.
