EML Problem on Astra 1.6 8v Club 2001?

Can someone please help?

I have an Astra - Y reg , the Engine management light came on (car with spanner). took it to the garage - code came up as camshaft sensor. Had it replaced. Light came on again - They cleaned the EGR valve - Light came on again - with same camshaft sensor code. It only comes on when its hot - starting from cold no problems. when it gets hot (temp needle gets to about half way) the light comes on and it goes into limp mode. Leave it overnight, start it in the morning and its fine again until it warms up. Start from warm and it revs erratically for a few seconds then the light comes on and its normal.

Apart from going into limp mode and slight problem starting from warm it runs without any problems.

Garage took the car in for 5 days for observation to run it hot and cold. They checked everything they could think of - (including taking the timing belt off and timing belt tensioner / crankshaft sensor etc and they had a car electrician give it the once over - did not charge anything) Garage say its an ECU fault and that needs to be changed- but why would it go wrong when the car gets hot?

Any ideas would be much appreciated...

  1. It's quite feasible that it's an ecu problem, but the best way to confirm is to try a different ecu. You suggest that the problem is pretty predictable, so it should be obvious straight away.

The temperature could either be related to the time the engine's been on, as the ecu will get warm too due to the internal components heating up, or due to a software glitch where the ecu doesn't hold values for the correct settings for a warm engine.

  2. that JG knows the crack...a replacement from a brakers shouldnt brake the bank, around £40...me ide give it a go,or flog it....
