  1. If you're planning to being an EMT, initially to get your qualifications background documented. Then of course its better to get your start as a volunteer.

As for it interfering with your college courses, that depends upon your availability to the company that runs the services. You can make it clear that you're available at specific times of the day/evening, because you're going to school. As a volunteer - it shouldn't be much of a problem, because they will take any good emt's they can get.

If you're looking to make some money as a part-time job, it's not too bad.  Though you may not make a huge pile of bucks. It depends upon the Ambulance Service - some independent operations may not pay as well as some might expect. But for a part-time job it does have its advantages - because the need is there for good people that can do the work.

Now if you were to take a break from college, and do it full time for a while, you might like to try to get in with the County or State Civil Services, because you will make a little more.  In some states they're unionized and therefore make more than your typical independent service provider. If you happen to decide to be an EMT with the fire dept. or police dept. that would be better in a big city, because there is the job security of that particular job being one of the essential services of any metropolitain area.

Some emt's eventually move on to professional nursing and even go on to being a phycisian. Its a choice. A few do it as a career, particularly if they are in a union in a metropolitain institution like the Fire Dept..

Its not for everyone, but if you got what it takes, there is a future in that profession.

    good luck sweetie!

  2. One of the largest ems transport companies is American Medical Response, AMR  is a national company that does transports from nursing homes to the hospital ( called raisin runs). As well as emergancy calls.  You can ask your instructors for some guidance on who is hiring in your area. A good place to start is also your local volunteer fire dept, they are always looking for help. There isn't a ton of $$ in doing this but you will make a difference and can be proud about what you do.

Scroll down to EMT-Basic and there's a list of colleges.  Find the link of one near you and view the information for the program at that location.  Good Luck!!
