EMT to Paramedic?

Can you start as a EMT-Intermediate or do you have to start as a EMT-Basic to reach to a paramedic?

  1. EMT's have several different duties.  One would be a paramedic which requires a certain amount of medical training.  Why not check with your local EMT facility and ask what their requirements are for their different positions.  Also, they may offer training courses throughout the year.


  2. to be a paramedic (EMT advanced) you need to be actively working as an EMT.  So yes, you need to complete EMT Basic first and then be working for a period.  EMT intermediate is not essential, but will contribute to your body of knowledge and skill level.

  3. EMT-B is the first step to becoming an EMT-I  or EMT-P. Look at it this way, everybody is going to be looking at you for direction. If you dont have the basics down, how are you gonna delegate in an emergency. In other words, if you make an OK EMT then your gonna be a bad paramedic. Do some time on the rig learn the basics on a 911 provider car.
