1. I don't know much about you, but first I can say you belong to the Yahoo Answers discourse community just by posting a question on this page. What kind of job do you have? If you use a lot of specific terms and phrases at the job that you only use there, you can consider that a discourse community. Perhaps you and your friends love a certain movie so much that you're always quoting from it; you and your friends could then be considered part of a discourse community. Are you in school? When you take classes in a certain field, you could consider yourself part of that discourse community. You and your teammembers on a sports team could also count. If you belong to a church, that could work too.

  2. READ CAREFULLY

What is a discourse community? A discourse community is a group of people who "speak the same language" or in other words people who share an interest in certain topics, share a body of knowledge about those topics, and possess a common vocabulary for discussing those topics. Have you ever been around a group of people who shared a common passion that you knew nothing about? Perhaps it is a particular sport or activity, an artistic talent, or a job, but it is likely that without sharing that same passion you find it difficult to follow their conversation. That is because you are not a member of that discourse community. While they are speaking the same language as you -- English -- the context of the discourse community changes the way language is used as well as the content of that language.

You already belong to several discourse communities as a result of your family, ethnic, and religious background as well as your personal interests and activities. Students enter the larger discourse community of the instituion they attend as well as numerous smaller discourse communities within that institution including specific classrooms, clubs and organizations, and majors and programs.Workers enter the larger discourse community of their employer and depending on the size and focus of the institution may also enter smaller discourse communities within it as well.

*** For example, in a hospital a nurse might belong to the discourse community of the hospital, the nursing staff, and the Emergency Department

  3. discourse community is nothing but ppl with same thoughts and ideas together.......

like u find so many such communities in any social networking.........

    particular celeb's fans

fans of a particular sport or book or anything

they have their own rules that they follow and attitudes that may be unacceptable outside the community

  4. A discourse community is a group of people who 'speak the lingo' or method of speaking. You probably talk very differently, using different words and slang, when you talk to your teachers as opposed to how you talk to your friends at the mall. Even though you're using the same *language* to the different groups, you're using different words, different slang, etc.

So, there are two examples right there! One discourse community is the group of friends you hang out with at the mall. You might say 'Hey, 'sup?' to greet your friends, but say 'Hello' to greet your teacher.

Think of other situations where you use specific language that people outside the group might not understand. Players on a basketball team might say 'west coast offense, 22-a', which everyone on the team understands but (hopefully) means nothing to the other team and the fans. If you work in a restaurant, you may communicate with slang words there that everyone on the staff recognizes but the customers don't.
