EPL Breaking News: Newcastle United’s center back Sol Campbell confirms his availability for England in Euro 2012
Newcastle United’s newly signed center back Sol Campbell has announced his availability for the English squad as they prepare to start their campaign for Euro 2012.
He stated that although he had remained out of action for some time now in relation to his national duty, but he considered himself fit to play for his country even at 35. Campbell made a comeback to top level football in January. He was impressive in his routine. At present also, he is proving that he still has it what it takes to be a valuable asset for the club. He wants to be the star at Tyneside and wishes them success this season.
The defender told media that he could provide the England manager Fabio Capello with the Three Lions, the ex-factor they need in their defense. He added that with John Terry injured, he could help the team and if Capello chooses him, he would also be able to help other players in the team. Campbell said, “I think it all comes down to who is at the helm, the people behind the associations and the mentality of the nation. You go to Italy where defenders and keepers go on and on. The names of those guys roll off the tongue”.
The former Arsenal player started his career with Tottenham Hotspurs and capped 255 matches for them while scoring 10 goals. In 2001, he switched to Arsenal and enjoyed 135 matches in their invincible era, also scoring 8 goals. In 2006, he was signed by Portsmouth where he stayed for 3 years making 95 appearances and scoring 2 goals. In 2009, he played briefly for Notts County while in 2010; he returned to Arsenal but played just 11 matches till his departure to Newcastle United.
Despite the age, Sol Campbell is considered a weathered veteran who knows how to defend. He commented on the matter, “If you’re still fit and strong and still want it, it shouldn’t matter what age you are. You have the experience and it shouldn’t be a problem.” The England-born concluded, “I know last year, I had what it takes. I still have the passion, the fire in my belly, the will to win. So I am going to fight on the pitch for Newcastle and if it comes to the stage where someone says can you fight for England, then I will fight for England”.
