EPL Breaking News: Sir Alex Ferguson not keen on signing players in January transfer window
After it was suggested in various British newspapers and football news websites that Manchester United will embark on the winter transfer window spending spree, their veteran manager has come out and cleared up the situation saying that United might not
do any business at all in the January transfer window.
The winter transfer window is usually seen by many as a slow transfer period as compared to the red hot summer transfer window which opens at the end of the club football season in May and extends till the end of August each year. On the other hand, the
winter transfer window opens on 1st of January and closes on the 31st of January.
Manchester United have traditionally been slow in doing business in the January transfer window. However, it should be noted that some of the club’s most important signings have been made in the winter transfer window such as Patrice Evra from Monaco and
Nemanja Vidic from the Russian football league.
Both the defenders, one of whom is the club captain at Manchester United now were bought by Sir Alex Ferguson in the winter of 2006 before the 2006-2007 English Premier League season began. Manchester United’s manager saw his side overcome a resurgent Tottenham
side in their latest Premier League match. United outplayed the visitors at Old Trafford as a goal each from Nemanja Vidic and Luis Nani sent the Spurs packing.
Ferguson spoke after the match about his club’s possible spending spree in January. The Scottish national said, "We won't be buying in January, definitely not. If you want someone to play in Europe, you are limited right away. There are hundreds of players
cup-tied. You have five months left of the season, I will have Antonio Valencia back hopefully towards the end of February, which is a new player coming back. If Michael Owen gets back, it is another new player coming back. So with the squad I've got, I don't
see any reason for us to buy anyone."
Manchester United are currently third in the English Premier League as Chelsea occupy the first spot in the league rankings followed by Arsenal in the second.
