EPL - Liverpool signs a new goalkeeper Brad Jones from Middlesbrough
The Liverpool Football club is on the verge of signing a new goalkeeper, although, they are considered among the best in that department.
Over time many legends have passed between the goal posts of Anfield and currently one of the world’s best goalkeepers; squad member of Spain’s World Cup winning team in 2010 and ranked number 3, Pepe Reina is the glove man for the Merseyside.
He has proved himself as one of the best, leaving his impressions yet again by winning the Golden Glove award last season.
Now there is a new man coming in to the department to learn under the wings of Reina and later on become the new number 1. Brad Jones the shot stopper from Middlesbrough is the man signed by the Reds.
The 28-year-old will now be the substitute after he got through the club’s medical. Anfield board has just confirmed his arrival at the club for 2.3 million pounds, and have told they had been noticing his performance for some time and finally decided to sign him.
The Australian international recently travelled on unannounced trip to Liverpool, where the doctors confirmed that he was healthy and running. Soon after that the club held a press conference to announce their new arrival.
The deal was imminent and the rumours of his arrival had been solidified long before the signing. Both parties had agreed on the fee of the player; however some minor changes in the agreement were the only reasons the signing hadn’t happened yet.
One of the major reasons the new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has signed the player because he helps the squad being qualified as a home-grown player under the new FA rules.
These rules have benefited some, while they are considered a pest to others. For instance, Chelsea is short 6 players as they have to fill in the quota of 8. If they are unable to do that then the FA and the Champions League board will have a problem with them.
All this has happened after he joined the Teessiders, while being trained and now the Hodgson has said that he is the perfect number two for Reina.
The Reds have just confirmed the signing on their official website, which means there is more to come about him in their press conferences in the future.
Jones has complied a total of 76 appearances for the Teessiders, while 24 of them came last season. Over the past years he has been away from Middlesbrough mainly, as he was sent off on loan.
He has played for Shelbourne, Stockport County, Rotherham United, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday.
There are many clubs that are focusing on their goalkeeping department this season and that includes all big clubs; Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Arsenal is hoping to sign in the Manchester City goalkeepers; either Shay Given or Joe Hart. With last year’s terrible goalkeeping by Manuel Almunia, they will be happy to get any of the shot-stoppers.
Last season’s goal keeping errors lost them about 25 points, which if avoided could have easily taken them to the title’s victory.
