EPL Match Report: Newcastle United 6-0 Aston Villa
So far 6-0 seems to be a very popular score line. Chelsea started the trend with their 6-0 win against West Brom on the opening day of the League. The Blues repeated their 6-goal victory against Wigan this weekend, with the inspired Gunners earning themselves a 6-0 win, which saw Theo Walcott score a hat-trick. Now Newcastle have gone and won 6-0 and that too against Aston Villa. This result is undoubtedly the greatest upset of the weekend.
Andy Carroll was the hero for the Magpies with his hat-trick as Newcastle completely destroyed Aston Villa, who has been struggling since the departure of manager Martin O’Neill. This did not seem like the same Newcastle who had been defeated 3-0 by Manchester United just last week, as they ruthlessly shot six goals past Villa.
John Carew had a chance in the 10th minute to give Villa the lead but the penalty went just high over the bar. Villa missed their only real opportunity in the match; Newcastle would not make the same mistake. Carroll, wearing Alan Shearer’s number nine shirt, scored thrice after Joey Barton opened the scoring two minutes after the penalty miss and Nolan added a second to it with 32 minutes gone by.
The crowd of 43,546 was delighted to finally watch the Magpies in such good form; they received a further boost with the half time announcement of the signing of Cheick Tiote, the Ivory Coast International who is set to arrive from the Dutch club FC Twente.
It has been argued that the match would have gone differently, had Carew not missed the penalty, given after just 10 minutes of play. The miss gave the Magpies the confidence to go ahead and score six goals, and which reduced Aston Villa to defending and hoping they didn’t concede any more goals. The last goal came with only two minutes remaining on the clock, after which the stadium exploded.
Joey Barton was 30 yards out when he smashed the ball in with a dipping right foot shot over the Villa keeper, Brad Friedel. Jose Enrique, whose role in the match was limited to trying to contain winger Marc Albrighton managed to go forward down the left flank where he delivered a cross to Carroll who headed it to Nolan. Even though his initial effort was saved, he scored off the rebound.
Carroll was the next to score after setting up the previous goal; he capitalized on a defensive error by Richard Dunne. Dunne did not effectively clear Williamson’s header attempt at goal from Barton’s corner. The ball just dropped at the striker’s feet, who did not miss the opportunity and scored off his left foot.
Newcastle would have scored more goals if there had been more time, Villa were relieved to hear the full time whistle. It will take some time getting over this embarrassing 6-0 defeat by the recently promoted Magpies, who have shown that they’re here to stay.
Joey Barton, the opening goal scorer spoke to reporters after the match saying, “We weren't too bothered about Monday - a lot of teams will get beaten by more than we did at Manchester United. It was important to make a statement today and now we want to carry the momentum forward. One swallow doesn't make a summer but we've got to put in the same kind of shift in our next game at Wolves.”
Andy Carroll was also delighted with the result, he said, “It's a great feeling (to score a hat-trick). The lads worked hard and we deserved the win. Obviously people say there is extra responsibility [wearing the No. 9 shirt] but I enjoy playing football whatever number it is.”
