EPL: Mick McCarthy baffled by low transfers, Owen Coyle looks for new players
Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy has confessed that he is confused with the laziness of the transfer market this summer, and fails to understand the reason behind such an issue.
McCarthy has already landed four new players to the club, with Jelle Van Damme, Steven Fletcher, Steven Hunt and Steven Mouyokolo joining the club since the season ended. Mick is perhaps one of the few managers who have been actively bolstering his squad in the transfer window, and many of the other premier league clubs are yet to sign a new player.
While talking to a newspaper, the Wolves manager claimed that he has no clue why the market is so slow this year. Mick added that all the managers have been given their respective budgets to buy new players, but fails to understand why there is lack of movement in the premier league so far. McCarthy added that perhaps inflation in the market has slowed things down from what they used to be in the previous years, and speculated that perhaps teams are waiting to find quality players at cheaper rates.
Mick stated that managers are perhaps waiting for better options to come knocking at their doors, and don’t want to sign the first available target. The manager clarified that there are only five weeks left to sign new players, and submit the list of 25 players to the Premier league officials under the new rules. Therefore, it would be hard for the clubs to go and sign more players in such a short span of time, and may well have to be content with the current squad, for the coming six months. McCarthy expects that many of the clubs would be working on their current squad, and get the start of the season right. Any minor tweaks and issues can surely be fixed in the winter transfer window.
The Wolves manager added that all of the clubs are currently looking for players in different locations, and negotiating price and other arrangements. The manager stated that most of the clubs look for different sections to go and buy, while Manchester City is buying whomever they like. Manchester City is in a league of its own, and cannot be compared with other premier league clubs.
"Even Manchester United and Liverpool don't appear to be doing much, but there are little pockets of players we all know we can do business with”, stated the Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy.
In analysing the present market situation, McCarthy added that there are a few players left who can perhaps join the premier league, and are taking their time to decide which club they want to join.
In other premier league news, Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle expects to sign “two or three” suitable players to its side, and expects to deliver his 25 man squad list with those players.
Wanderers have already snapped up Robbie Blake, Martin Petrov and Marcos Alonso since the transfer window commenced in July, but wants to bolster his squad with new players. While giving an interview to the local news, Coyle confirmed that he’s still looking to improve his current squad, and confirmed that it’s not over yet. Owen added that he is confident that the club will add few more names to the outfit by the end of August, and expect those players to make it into the 25 man squad.
Owen explained that it is never easy to sign a player, as to reach an agreement a club has to go through various complications and formalities. It’s not just a matter of deciding the transfer fee, but other issues like player’s personal terms, rights, etc take a lot of time, signalling towards the Marcos Alonso saga.
Owen therefore expects his squad to improve in time, hopefully by the start of the new season. However, if that fails, the manager aimed to sign new players by the time the transfer window closes.
