EPL News: Arsenal Captain Apologizes, Van der Sar Unhappy with Draw
Fabregas Apologizes to Ward
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas apologized to Wolves left back Stephen Ward for a challenged that left the Wolves player with a cut ankle. The Spaniard tackled just two minutes before the whistle blew leaving the defender injured and the
Arsenal captain without a booking.
Arsenal beat Wolves 2-0 last night and excluding the unfortunate incident, the match went by pretty smoothly. Fabregas displayed class as he visited the Wolves dressing room after the match to apologize to Ward for his careless tackle.
Fabregas’ gesture was appreciated by Mick McCarthy, the Wolves boss. Despite losing to the Gunners, he was full of praise for the Arsenal captain. He mentioned how it was very unusual for a player to apologize for an unfair tackle after
the match.
McCarthy told reporters, “He's gone for the ball. Wardy's cut but has taken it like a man. It's brilliant that Fabregas came in and apologized. He's late, but come on - it's a mistimed tackle. I can deal with that,
I don't go around whining when my players get tackled.”
He continued, “What I can't do with is everyone bitching at my team when we foul someone. It's all amateur dramatic bulls**t, I'm afraid. Today was like a throwback to when your mate broke your nose and then bought
you a pint.”
Edwin Van der Sar Claims City wanted a Draw
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar said after the Manchester derby, which ended in a 0-0 draw, that Manchester City were aiming for a draw. He insisted that City were trying their best not to lose the game at Eastlands last
night.
The hype created about the Manchester derby ended in disappointment as both sides had very little chances and the final scored read 0-0. The 40 year old keeper said that United had every intention of winning, but Manchester City were satisfied
with a draw.
He told reporters, “City did not really come forward and leave their defensive position. They were clearly aiming for a point, whereas we really wanted to win. They were more defensive and I didn't have much to do
apart from save a free-kick. If the game had lasted longer, we might have got more from it.”
The draw last night left Manchester United in second place, four points behind top of the league Chelsea, who won 1-0 at Fulham. Manchester City maintain fourth place in the table, behind Arsenal, who also won last night, 2-0 against Wolves.
