EPL News: Arsenals midfield prospects for the coming season
One of the best aspects about Arsenal over the years has been their phenomenal midfield. Arsenal has always managed to produce quality midfielders or have managed to turn average midfielders into midfield magicians. That has been the case and most people expect it to be the case for ages to come.
Arsene Wenger however was faced with some slight worries this time around. During the summer transfer window there were numerous rumours and speculations going around claiming that Arsenal’s captain and driving force in the midfield, Cesc Fabregas was on his way to Barcelona.
This news was like a bad nightmare to the fans and the team. Most people felt as though the inevitable had happened and there was no going back. However recently Fabregas managed to return to the Arsenal training camp and put those rumours and speculations to rest, for at least another year.
This has given Arsenal and Arsene Wenger a sense of security in the midfield for another year. Everyone is well aware of the creativity, technique and ability that Fabregas brings with him. Only this time around, he would be trying to play at his optimum level. This is mainly due to the fact that he just won the FIFA World Cup with Spain and he would like to prove to all his critics that despite the speculations, he is still committed to Arsenal and will continue to give it his all.
That being said, Arsene Wenger is more than likely to use the two holding midfielders and three attacking ahead of them in his formation. The two holding midfielders Abou Diaby and Alex Song will be his preferred choices. Song has proven his worth over the last couple of seasons with some tremendous tackling and ball retention. Diaby on the other hand has been greatly inconsistent. However, the player will be looking to cement his position in the Arsenal squad once and for all. The third option that Arsenal has is that of Danielson who is the youngest of the three players at Arsenal who are capable of playing as holding midfielders and the least experienced too. Nevertheless, Danielson can make a permanent mark on the first team if he manages to outperform either of the other two players competing for the same spot in the line up.
Ahead of those two holding midfielders is where Arsenal has a lot of options. Players like Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott, Rosicky and obviously Fabregas can all play in there. The primary candidates for the three attacking midfielders are expected to be Fabregas, Nasri and Arshavin.
All three of those players have proved their worth and ability over the past couple of seasons and would be looking to maintain their position in the squad for the next season. Fabregas helps provide the killer passing that is required in the middle, Nasri provides the quick footwork and skills and Arshavin provides the pace. On paper, the trio would appear to be the perfect combination, but it would also depend on the form that the players have and the coordination and understanding that they develop.
Walcott and Rosicky will be great to bring on in case a change is required to the squad. Walcott would help provide the pace that could be introduced into the team.
On the whole, Arsenal possesses world class talent which is capable of giving any opposition a hard time. If the midfield can manage to hold together and provide the performances that are expected of them, then Arsenal might be able to launch a successful title challenge.
