EPL News: Carragher issues a warning call for Liverpool as Martinez warned about Rooney’s comeback
Jamie Carragher has come out with all guns blazing and issued a warning call for the Reds who have now had a two match winless streak in the English Premier League after beating Chelsea by two goals to nil at Anfield. Liverpool lost their
last league match to Stoke City and before that they drew against Wigan Athletic. The Reds were dealt by another blow in mid-week as their captain; Steven Gerrard suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with England.
Carragher spoke about the situation at Liverpool, as he said, "There is no doubt Steven will be missed whether we win, lose or draw because he is such an important player here," said Carragher, who recently described Gerrard as the best
player in the club's history. But it is up to us to perform well and lessen the impact, like when we beat Spurs (2-0) in January without him and Fernando. There are a few similarities because that game came a few days after a disappointing result against Stoke
when we drew 1-1 but we showed we could bounce back."
Speaking to the press, Carragher added, "Everyone knows what great quality Steven has and it is frustrating for everyone - though nobody more than him - that he is out because he has been in such good form. But the most important thing
now is beating West Ham. We know we didn't perform at Stoke but if we get three points tomorrow, the league table will look much better and we can push on."
Liverpool will welcome back the likes of Glen Johnson and Fabio Aurelio, something that will go a long way as far as making up for Gerrard’s absence is concerned. Peter Brukner, Liverpool’s head of sports medicine and science stated, "It's
nice to have some good news. Fabio's worked incredibly hard. I think we all know he's had a horrendous run with injuries in the last two or three years and he got injured again a few weeks ago. He's worked very hard to get himself right. He's trained for the
last week or so and played the majority of the reserve game on Tuesday, and I'm happy to report that he's come through that well. He's available for first-team selection this week and hopefully his injury problems are in the past."
On the other hand, Wigan’s manager was worried about his team’s chances at Old Trafford on Saturday as the Red Devils welcome back their star striker Wayne Rooney from his ankle injury. Roberto Martinez, the Latics manager said, "You don't
want Wayne Rooney to come back against you. He is more than capable of getting back to his best level. How long it will take him, we don't know. But when you talk about world-class players, they do not have to be 100 per cent to make an impact in any game.
Wayne Rooney will do that when he plays. When you have his talent you don't have to be 100 per cent fit or play well for 90 minutes to have an important role."
Martinez added more on Rooney as he remarked, "At the moment it is going to be as if he is a new player, a fresh player. You are playing against a team that has found the solution of being unbeaten for 18 games. You are playing against
a very professional side. But if Rooney plays then the task will be harder because he is one of the best players in world football. Any team in world football has a bad spell and you lose games. Manchester United, when they are not at their best, still do
not lose.”
