EPL News: Chelsea Hit-man Didier Drogba to Play against Fulham despite having Malaria
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will play for the Blues tonight against Fulham despite suffering from malaria. The 32-year-old Ivoirian was put on a 48 hour medication course to help combat the disease at the start of the week but that has
not entirely eradicated it. Now reports have confirmed that despite the situation Drogba will be in squad to face Fulham as they travel to Stamford Bridge.
Drogba has been cleared by specialists and the Chelsea medical team, but neither were sure when the striker contracted the disease. They believe that the disease had been in his system for several months, but had been impossible to detect
because it had been dormant. They made several guesses and even considered the possibility that the disease dated back to last year.
A series of tests were conducted, including screening for tropical diseases and it was not until Monday that the diagnosis was made that Drogba was suffering from malaria. Doctors said that it was lack of parasitic activity in his blood
which made the disease difficult to detect. Drogba has been under the weather for the past month, which had affected his performance on the pitch.
However, now that the disease has been identified the medical staff at Chelsea is confident it can be cured, without a chance of the strain returning. Certain precautions will have to be taken though; Drogba will have to be rested regularly
so that he is not in any danger of contracting a serious illness. The disease has in the past affected other African footballers including Kolo Toure and Yakubu.
It is a possibility that Drogba got affected by the disease on one of his trips to his home country, Ivory Coast. The Ivoirian international returned there to watch his country play last month, but admitted that he had been feeling down
even before he flew to Ivory Coast. Drogba is a strong player and chances are he will be starting against Fulham tonight.
Ancelotti told reporters, “He has this virus (sic) and, obviously, he lost power and training. He lost his condition. He’s had treatment and now he’s OK. He’ll come back immediately in the best condition. He suffered, obviously, because
he wasn’t 100 per cent but now, after treatment, he’ll be better. He had malaria. He had the tests in the last day, and they showed this kind of virus. Now he’s good.”
However, it is clear that the striker, who did not start the weekend’s away fixture against Liverpool, and only made an appearance in the second half, is not yet clear to play.  On the issue Ancelotti stated, “Didier was, for this month,
having difficulty to train. He was unselfish to play. Now he has the possibility to improve his condition without a problem. He will play tomorrow.”
