EPL News: Gerrard out for four weeks as Jovanovic vows to fight for a first team place at Liverpool
Liverpool’s skipper Steven Gerrard, who suffered a hamstring injury while on international football duty for England as they played in a friendly encounter against France is expected to be out for three to four weeks after the extent of his hamstring problem
got confirmed on Thursday. Peter Brukner, Liverpool’s head of sports medicine and science confirmed to the press that the midfielder’s injury was significant enough to keep him out of action.
Brukner said, "Steven injured his hamstring. He's just been in for an early assessment here and it certainly looks like a significant hamstring injury. He's going to be out for a little while, I'm afraid. I'd imagine it could be three to four weeks." Gerrard
was scheduled to play only an hour of football in mid-week for England but injury to Gareth Barry meant that the midfielder played till the final five minutes, which he missed due to his injury. The extent of time, Gerrard spent on the pitch for England provoked
an angry reaction from Liverpool’s head of fitness Darren Burgess.
Darren made his thoughts known through his twitter account update which said, "Unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regard to Steven Gerrard's injury. Completely ignored agreement and past history. Completely amateurish and
now we pay for their incompetence. Absolutely disgraceful."
However, Brukner added to his comments later on as he stated, "If you put your hand up to play for your country, you've got to accept how long they want you to play for. There were obviously circumstances last night which came together to result in Steven
playing for a bit longer than we'd hoped, which is disappointing but there's nothing we can do about that now. We'll move on and work as hard as we can to get him back playing for Liverpool as soon as possible."
Jovanovic, Liverpool’s new winger who was bought by the club in the summer transfer window of 2010 has come out and stated that he is ready to fight for his place in Liverpool’s first team after having a tough start to his Anfield career. Jovanovic has also
ruled himself out of contention as far as international football goes.
He explained his stance to the media, as he remarked, “Did I go to the airport to wish my friends good luck before the game in Sofia? No, because I didn't want to be in the spotlight for nothing. This isn't how I do things. I am 29 years old and I have a
career which is quite good. But I know when I am not playing well and that is why I told my national coach (Vladimir) Petrovic that I don't want to be called up until I am playing first-team football at Liverpool. This is the honest thing to do and I wouldn't
have it any other way."
