EPL News: Liverpool Striker Fernando Torres injury confirmation, manager Roy Hodgson declares Scouse to buckle up for comeback (Part 2)
The derby match of Merseyside where the Reds will battle it out with Blues will be one of the most heated clashes in recent times. Both clubs grew this rivalry in a chronicle manner; after they separated from each other. They have had fights over stadiums,
players and names. Though Everton won the original name, it could not get its hand on the stadium.
Nevertheless, failure at capturing the name didn’t stop Liverpool from becoming of the biggest footballing clubs in the world. With a joint record of 18 Premier League titles, 7 FA Cups, 7 League, 15 FA Shields, 5 Champions League titles, 3 Europa Cups and
3 Super Cups the club has been one of the most prominent football powerhouse over the century, only challenged by Manchester United in England which have gathered fame over past quarter of a century.
The derby encounter will take place at Goodison Park on the 17th October. The match will also bear significance as Liverpool is off to one of its worst campaign in a very very long time.
As a matter of fact, the last time the club gave such a dismissive performance was in the season of 1953-54 after which the club rejuvenated and became a dominating power in football.
Currently Liverpool is at the 18th place in English Premier League, a place below Everton, therefore they will have pedal up their campaign if they want to prevent a tragedy similar to the one in 1953-54, where they got relegated.
Everton and Liverpool are currently just separated from their goal difference. A win at this point would take the respective club to the upper parts of the table. The Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has said that he is optimistic about the future.
He admitted that the club was facing many problems and needed to turn over a new leaf. The former Fulham manager said that the process of turning into a better team will be hard but good news for Anfield, as they have full potential to do it, and all that
was needed was some effort.
The 63 year old manager stated that the club had played just 7 matches right now, it is a team that has many new players in it and they will take some time to grow accustomed to each other. Hodgson also explained that they had 31 matches left on the list
and he hoped that Liverpool were going to make a strong comeback from here onwards.
He accepted that Torres would have to play a significant role in Liverpool’s success. He also added that he had the capability to become one of the greatest players to hail from the Merseyside and therefore establish his recognition in the world.
The former Atletico Madrid player, Torres has played in 86 matches for Liverpool and scored 57 goals. For Spain Torres participated in 81 matches and scored 26 goals. The Red Goal Machine will have to overcome mental barriers that he is facing to bring out
his top notch performance. Though Torres has constantly faced injuries one after another since last year he will now have to step up to become the saviour of Kop.
Hodgson explained that it was physiological warfare that Liverpool will have to get over with, “I don't think it matters we will be in the bottom three for the next fortnight. The psychological blow of being in the bottom three after seven games is a
d**n sight less damaging than being there from game number 18 to game number 36, as I experienced at Fulham. I had 18 games in the bottom three - that is psychological damage, especially when you see games running out and the number of points you need getting
bigger and bigger.”
