EPL News: Liverpool prove class by defeating leaders Chelsea, Fernando Torres the hailed hero, again
It was the return of one of Merseyside’s favourite son at Anfield as he became a one man unstoppable army to destroy the Blues at home and in the end gather roses from the field.
Fernando Torres’ impeccable form at home and against Chelsea continues as the Spanish super star scored two stunning goals guiding Liverpool to victory in English Premier League against the South London based club.
Now Torres has 7 goals in 8 fixtures against Chelsea. The 2 goal haul against the defending champions of Premier League and the topper of the table have led Manchester United even closer to the top and now they are breathing down their necks just two points
away.
It was a deserved victory from the Reds even though they had a lesser percentage of ball possession. In that wake they certainly proved that what you do with the ball at your feet is far more important than just possessing it.
Liverpool’s manager and captain Roy Hodgson and Steven Gerrard had already stated they will be in for a very tough battle and indeed it was a tough battle from which Liverpool passed out to be the better side.
In fact the former Fulham manager had even earlier expressed that Reds were in for a relegation battle this year and their skipper had asked his fans to brace a possible defeat, but as the “You’ll Never Walk Alone” anthem rang in the stadium and around Kop;
it was remembered that the record holders of 18 league titles and 5 great European victories will not go down that easy.
The Anfield ruler Roy Hodgson was happy on arriving in to the encounter with wins over Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and the Italian club Napoli in Europa League. He had certainly made an intelligent plan to counter the impregnable defence of Chelsea
and to defeat them in the midfield.
Though Chelsea has the best left wing in the world with the services of Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda, Nicolas Anelka, John Terry and Didier Drogba it was disappointing to say the least for them not break in to the inexperienced right wing of Liverpool.
Both of Liverpool’s wings have been unstable this season. Now that the left wing had its player back on field, Paul Konchesky, it was the right wing that was missing Glenn Johnson but Marin Kelly accomplished a brilliant job there and he surely will be appreciated
with much praise for that.
In the match it didn’t take long for Liverpool to gain the lead as El Nino got free from the right wing and the Dutch star midfielder Dirk Kuyt gave him a finesse cross which he controlled with great class and after thwarting Cole and Terry he put the ball
past goal keeper Petr Cech in the lower right corner.
If that wasn’t enough to prove his revival of the 26-year-old produced a second goal after receiving a grounded pass from Portuguese Raul Meireles who himself was had an impressive game.
After receiving the pass, Torres fooled Cole while crossing to the edge of the box on the left. He then shot a fast swerving shot between two centre backs and jaw dropped goal keeper.
In the end it can be said without a doubt that Fernando Torres was at his old brilliance again. He was not like a shadow of his former self like in the earlier part of the season where he was barely seen on field.
In the match Torres even came back to defend and accounted for numerous steals. The conversion rate gave Liverpool a big advantage and that in the end helped the Red part of Merseyside to record a superb victory.
