EPL News: Liverpool to sign Zenit St Petersburg’s striker, Russian international Alexander Kerzhakov
After the power switch from American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to John H. Henry of New England Sports Ventures, it seems that Liverpool is finally back in the game to look ahead and talk about signings before the transfer
window has actually started.
At the moment, the club is eyeing the 27-year-old Russian international, Alexander Kerzhakov. Officials from the club have confirmed that there is a possibility in which the Reds might sign in the Russia’s world class striker.
It is rumoured that Alexander Kerzhakov has caused movement among the tides in other clubs as the January transfer window continues to draw nearer and the market for players still being quite unsettled.
Reports have confirmed that scouts and experts had been observing the player for some time now in Russia where he plays for Zenit St. Petersburg. They were also present when the player scored for Russia in the match against Ireland
last week in the Euro 2012 qualification matches.
This was after the former Dynamo Moscow player produced a hat-trick for Zenit St. Petersburg. Kerzhakov, who has also played for Sevilla (2006-2008), was the star in the Anderlecht in the Europa League. His recent form had been
impressive as he was once again the man under the spotlight when the club encountered Saturn Moscow in the Russian Premier League.
Last season, Zenit St. Petersburg finished at the 3rd position in their domestic league, but at that time, Kerzhakov used to play for Dynamo Moscow who finished at the 8th position in the RPL.
Liverpool officials, who have to further evaluate the form and performances of Kerzhakov, have requested for videos of the player. Kerzhakov has been in superb form this season, having already grabbed 11 goals in just 8 matches.
He joined the ranks of Zenit in January this year after a dismissive move to Sevilla earlier in 2006, after which he played for Dynamo Moscow for a season (2008-2009).
It is speculated that Liverpool will have to pay around 6 million pounds for the star Russian who still has 3 years on his contract which bind him to his present club.
Kerzhakov can present the Reds with quite a lot of diversity in attack. Kerzhakov can also play on the right wing, as a shadow/second striker along with an attacking midfielder.
At the moment, the offensive situation at Liverpool is extremely dire. They are in serious need of bringing in a couple of strikers, especially as they are out of form and on the edge of leaving Anfield.
The manager of Liverpool, Roy Hodgson, is under tons of pressure as the next 3 games are must-wins for him, especially if he wants to remain the boss of the Red part of Merseyside. At the moment, the club is in the relegation zone,
being at the 18th position while last season Scouse ended at the 7th position in the English Premier League.
