EPL News: Mick McCarthy emphasizes defensive for Wolves, Hiddink reveals interest from Liverpool and Manchester City
Mick McCarthy has stressed the importance of keeping a clean sheet as his side loss by three goals to two against Bolton Wanderers in their latest match in the English Premier League. McCarthy’s team conceded three goals before scoring
two to give a respectable aspect to the score line eventually.
The ex-Irish national team manager said after the match, "I think we have to make sure we keep a clean sheet, however that may be. Let's stay in the game to start with. We have played some great football and created loads of chances but
we have conceded three goals. We might have to just start at basics and make sure we keep a clean sheet."
Wolverhampton Wanderers played against Bolton after losing to Manchester United on the past weekend due to a late Park Ji Sung goal. Wolves were on course for a historic draw at Old Trafford but United came back late in the match to steal
the win. However, Mick was quite complimentary of Bolton as he said, "I thought this was a harder game - and I said that to the players in the week - because of the danger that people expect us to win it. They are a very good team, on-form at the minute, so
it was always going to be a hard game - and it was made increasingly hard by conceding a goal after 50 seconds."
Nonetheless, Bolton’s manager Owen Coyle was all praise for the Wolves as he said, “Wolves are a far better side than their league position suggests and that will turn for them, there is no doubt. They just have to keep banging away on
that door, but I have to look after Bolton Wanderers, and it was an important win for us."
Bolton who have only one game in the last nine matches in the English Premier League are now 5th in the English Premier League. Coyle spoke Bolton’s ambitions as a football club as he said, “My aspirations are well-documented.
At any football club that I'm fortunate enough to be the manager of, I always try to improve that club on a year on year basis, recognizing that some years it is easier than others in terms of finance. Sometimes you can go and spend and we have not had that
luxury this year, but we have a group of players who give everything they have got. The group is a joy to work with and we have to keep striving to be the best we can. We have shown that we can go toe-to-toe with the best that we can defend for our lives if
we have to and we can show a little bit of quality on the ball."
On the other hand, Gus Hiddink the ex-Chelsea manager revealed to the press recently that both Liverpool and Manchester City approached him during the summer of 2010 for management duties. Hiddink said, "In the summer City and Liverpool
both came to me with an inquiry. But at my age I don't want to manage a club again for seven days a week over three years."
City’s chief communications officer Vicky Kloss was quick to deny any claims that Hiddink made in the press as he said, "We strenuously deny that we have ever spoken to Gus Hiddink or any other manager about the possibility of succeeding
Roberto Mancini.” Hiddink is currently in charge of the Turkish national team whereas Manchester City presently occupy the 4th place spot in the English Premier League table.
