EPL News: Roy Hodgson Admits His Side Didn’t Deserve To Win
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson admitted that his side did not deserve to win against Wigan Athletic in last night’s Premier League fixture. He said that their poor performance was because of the small squad he had at his disposal.
Liverpool took the lead thanks to Fernando Torres, but they eventually gave way in the second half and conceded a goal. It was Hugo Rodallega who equalized for his side and even though Steven Gerrard hit the bar late on, but the match
ended 1-1.
Hodgson spoke of his team’s shortcomings after the match, which was an obvious message to the owners to invest in new signings in the upcoming January transfer window. The Englishman has already said that he wishes to purchase 5-6 players
in January and is waiting for funds.
The Liverpool boss told reporters in a press conference after the disappointing draw, he said, “We didn't deserve to win the game. I thought we looked tired today; our passing was not anywhere near where we expect
it to be. We had a bright start and bright finish but I think we can be more than happy with a point.”
He added, “The goal was a wonderful piece of play from two outstanding players, a marvellous pass and a wonderful finish which put us on the front foot. But we didn't capitalize on that. We had a spell where we were
pretty much in control but from the start of the second half we invited Wigan on to us all the time by consistently giving the ball away.”
Hodgson continued, “As a result they took advantage and scored an equalizing goal. We did a little better towards the end and we were unlucky with Steven's shot which hit the underside of the crossbar. But it would
have been harsh on Wigan had we won it and they can probably feel the 1-1 result flatters us more than them.”
Hodgson explained that their disappointing performance was because of the small squad he had at his disposal, the Reds boss has a much depleted squad because of injuries and that has affected their performance. He continued, “You
can put it down to Napoli, Blackburn, Bolton and Chelsea with a small squad of players. We have got five injuries at the moment, which is what we have and are using.”
