EPL News: Sir Alex Ferguson praises Manchester United defence, looks forward to Chelsea
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that his side’s fixture against Chelsea – “a big, big game for United” – will be important in establishing the top of the Premier League.
Manchester United are at the top of the League currently, having beaten Arsenal on Monday and with a game still in hand. But the Red Devils are aware that a loss at Stamford Bridge could damage their title hopes. They will go into
the match determined not to slip up so that they can maintain their lead.
Apart from their top spot on the League table, there is more at stake for United. They have recently established a record 16-game winning streak in the League and will be hoping to extend that record by winning against Chelsea
and claiming three points in the process.
The title race this season has been tighter than usual: Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and even Tottenham are confident they can win it. The Red Devils’ match against Arsenal, which ended 1-0, was a close
one, and marked the first 1-0 victory for United in the League this season. In the 2009 season, when United won the Premier League title, they won over 10 games with the same 1-0 scoreline, so Ferguson cannot blamed if he takes this as a good omen.
When asked about his team’s defenders, Ferguson expressed pride in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, both of whom put in a spirited performance against Arsenal and were essential in maintaining the backline and keeping a clean sheet.
“[Ferdinand and Vidic] were tremendous,” said Ferguson. “That gives you a great foundation, and 1-0 victories can win you the league.  If my back four keep that foundation of not conceding any goals it gives us a really good chance.”
