EPL News: Sir Alex Ferguson unhappy with the Carlos Tevez poster as Derby night approaches in Manchester
Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a swipe at Manchester City’s marketing poster which features Carlos Tevez with the caption “Welcome to Manchester”. In his latest news before the eagerly awaited clash between Manchester City and Manchester
United at the Eastlands stadium, the long standing United manager has condemned it yet again. This is not the first time that the old Scottish veteran has lashed out against Manchester City’s petty tactics to assert themselves as the dominant force in the
city of Manchester. In 2009, Ferguson labelled the poster as childish and stupid.
The poster also won the “Best Marketing award at the MBNA north west Football Awards” but it has recently been taken off display. Nonetheless, Sir Alex Ferguson took no prisoners in his press conference interview as he said, "I don't know
how it was created, probably some advertising gimmick at City, but I don't think they can be proud of it. I said it was stupid at the time. They probably think that now. I don't see how they thought it would get more points off us when it came to playing on
a football pitch.”
Sir Alex went onto say, "Maybe it was worthwhile for some of the supporters but I think a lot of them were embarrassed. They would rather see that trophy being paraded through the city before they start screaming from the rooftops." These
remarks by Ferguson came on the eve of his team’s meeting with Manchester City which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 10th of November, 2010.
Manchester City and Manchester United have added spice to their rivalry in recent years as City have been boosted by a huge capital inflow due to their new ownership. Regardless, the Blues have not won a trophy in the past 34 years something
that United fans remind their neighbours about every time a Manchester Derby takes place. Manchester City won their last Premier League matches against West Bromwich Albion by two goals to nil whereas United also gained all three points from their match against
Wolverhampton Wanderers on the past weekend.
Ferguson played down the hype concerned Manchester City and their prospective challenge to Manchester United as he said, "If you don't recognize who won the league last season then you are very foolish. We have to chase Chelsea. That is
our challenge. It is not easy winning our league and they are a very formidable and experienced side." Sir Alex also took a jibe at City’s status as a big club in the English Premier League. Manchester United’s manager said, "City have been in the Second Division
for periods since I came down. It is only in the last few years they have been in a consistent position in the Premier League.”
However, Fergie as Ferguson is more affectionately known was quick to acknowledge the strength of the new Manchester City squad. He said, "They are far more solid. There is a far better structure to them. And derby games are fantastic.
What would you rather being doing, managing a game between City and United or Carlisle against Crewe? They are the ends of the spectrum. Derby games can divide husband and wife. You are involved in a game of emotions."
Speaking on Manchester United’s striker Wayne Rooney had his possible move to Manchester City before he signed a new contract at Old Trafford, Sir Alex added, "There was no interest from City. How can I say there was? There was no approach
from City to us.”
Manchester United manager also elaborated on his side’s 2-1 win over Wolves in their last league encounter. He said, "I listened to Match of the Day on Saturday and they said we were hopeless. But we had five world-class players out of
the team and had three lads up front who had only 30 games between them. We still won. It was a fantastic achievement given all the problems we had."
