EPL Review: Why Roberto Mancini needs to change his tactics
Before the season started Manchester City was everyone’s outside pick for the title but just two months on and there are already talks about the manager being sacked.
City have won only one of their last five fixtures and although a win against Chelsea was regarded as a sign of things to come but since then City have shown no intent and no character and as yet they are sitting fourth in the table.
Perhaps it’s the manager’s tactics or the team’s lack of belief but whatever it may be the performances that the Citizens are putting in are not good enough for anyone and it only is a matter of when not if the manager will be shown the door if their results
do not improve.
City spent more than 300 million pounds and bought every superstar to Manchester who was available and willing to come to England and yet they struggle against oppositions like Wigan and Blackpool and Stoke City.
Mancini’s tactics of playing three holding midfielders in the presence of a multi million pound attacking talent is mind boggling and yet the manager refuses to budge and puts in a similar team week in week out.
Any Manchester City fan travelling to London this week for the clash against Fulham expects some fireworks and entertainment so it seems that the person is likely to be disappointed simply because of the fact that a manger who decides to call off a striker,
your teams top scorer and send in a defensive midfielder when your team is chasing victory in a home game is not likely to be the man u are looking for, especially if you desire an adventurous away game against a gritty Fulham side.
Of course it takes only a few wins to get things up and running but City have lacked intent this season when everyone expected them to be title contenders, their results this season may be decent and a fourth place in the league above Liverpool and Tottenham,
nonetheless; flattering but their performances on the pitch have been far from convincing and tragicomic to some extent.
Unless Mancini drops his rearguard approach and plays a side that justifies the enormity of their aspirations and expectations City are not going to get any popular with anyone this season.
Tevez has been City’s knight in the shining armour this season and although Silva and Balotelli showed glimpses of what they can do but Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng along with James Milner have been disappointing to say the least.
Perhaps the blame lies with the managerial tactics and players can only do what they are asked to do by the manager but one suspects that things have to change and change fast if Mancini is to survive as the manager of Manchester City Football Club.
City’s opponents this week are going to be no pushovers as Fulham at home are a difficult side to beat as any of the top four sides would vouch for that fact and Mancini’s defensive tactics are testing the patience of the owners and the fans.
Results have to start flowing in and if Mancini wants to win over fans he has to start playing attractive football or else he can pack his bags as the owners who spent fortune just months ago will not be tolerating their dour performances for long.
A win against Fulham will keep City in the hunt for another week but his style of play is not winning any fans therefore they Citizens maybe in for another barren season.
It’s been 34 years since City last won a footballing trophy and the signs show that this might just continue into the next season.
