Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is reportedly looking to snap up the 31-year-old Manchester United striker Michael Owen during the January transfer window.
Owen, who joined United in 2009-10, has been a bench warmer in 2010-11 and his first team opportunities have been reduced to cameo appearances. He has just managed to play 9 times in nearly half a year but should he move to Sunderland, first team opportunities
would be guaranteed.
According to reports, Bruce thinks that Michael Owen is a player who likes to score instead of just getting the salary.
However, first team opportunities seem highly unlikely for the 31-year-old, as Sunderland already have the services of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Darren-Bent-c10358. Despite both these players finding it hard to get the ball past the goal line, Owen’s inclusion in the squad
would not solve the striker’s play time issues.
Bruce, however, believes that Owen’s clinical finishing can help his side get the desired results and he would be played along side Bent or Gyan for most of the fixtures.
Bruce is also keen on signing the 20-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-Welbeck-c10233 permanently. The winger has been the player of the season for Sunderland as his pace and agility has been the major reason behind the Black Cats’ success in 2010-11.
United might offload Owen in a player-plus-cash deal to snap up Sunderland midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102. Bruce shares a good relationship with former boss and mentor Sir Alex Ferguson and can use that to convince the Scotsman to sell Owen to the Black Cats.
Owen was on the bench for United’s nervy 0-0 draw against Tottenham. The highlight of Owen’s career has been his injury time winner in the Manchester Derby in 2009-10. He also scored his first European hat trick for United against Wolfsburg in the same season.
Apart from that, Owen has been limited to the bench and has scored 12 times from 39 appearances, most of them being off the bench.
