EPL Update: Carlos Tevez finally makes a comeback- leads Manchester City to 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic (Part 1)
It was Manchester City’s skipper, Carlos Tevez, who at last accomplished a job up to his potential during the clash of English Premier League’s 4th position team with the 18th.
At Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium, Man City thwarted the Wigans 2 – 0. They indeed had a slow start to the season but with their latest win, the Citizens have finally set pace for their campaign.
The first goal of the match was scored by Tevez himself in the 43rd minute when Wigan defender, Mohamed Diame, headed back a goal kick from the goal keeper, Joe Hart. But, the ball eventually travelled to the feet of Tevez and he made no mistake
in netting it.
Later on, it was Tevez again who proved to be the talisman for the Eastlands as he orchestrated Yaya Toure’s opening goal for the club in the 73rd minute. It so happened when Tevez ran hard and stole the ball from the dismissive Wigan defense.
The defender, Maynor Figueroa, seemed too lazy to cover up and so the header resulted in the ball landing with Tevez again. On this, the Argentinean striker lost no time in crossing the ball towards the highest EPL purchase, the Ivory Coast star Toure, who
in the end netted the ball.
Until Tevez drew first blood against the Latics’ shot stopper, Ali Al Habsi, Ali had been not more than a scare crow between the posts. Altogether, the goal scoring opportunities from the Eastlands were fairly low but same can be said for Wigan, who too
hardly seemed to be on the attack.
Still, City appeared to have been lucky on many occasions. For instance, when Micah Richards was blessed with a reckless challenge on, Figueroa went out without any harm while Tevez wasn’t declared off side as James Milner set him up for a goal. Richards
and Tevez, in essence, did play well. Early on in the game, Richards crossed a lethargic ball to Tevez, who picked it up but the slippery and untrustworthy terrain of DW Stadium made the task of controlling the ball harder than expected.
In the 14th minute, Tevez came excruciatingly close to opening his account as he ran out on the Wigan defense while striking a low ball from long range but the ball went inches past the goal keeper, Al Habsi's right hand.
In the 23rd minute, Nigel de Jong gave away a free ball to Wigan’s Figueroa, who ran like he was on fire down the midfield to put out the flames on the score board. It was a good run well covered by his team but the man on the flank proved to
be too good for him as he blocked his cross inside the box and eventually, the ball got cleared off. This blazing attempt was one of the few sights of attack, Wigan showed in the whole game.
The ball possession was at its maximum for Latics in the first half which also resulted in more attempts at the goal. A scare for City came when Wigan’s Di Santo shot a low skidding ball that ultimately travelled to the safe hands of Joe Hart. Hart, this
season, has been giving outstanding performances that have certainly made him the contender for the man between the posts for England too.
