The non existence of corner stats before the 03-04 season
For the second time in a row Chelsea hammered six past a hapless Wigan but 6 goals aside there was another staggering stat from the game that raised a few eyebrows. For the 90 minutes played and an additional 5 that were added at the end of it, the ball was not out for a corner for a single time in the game. According the esteemed professionals at Opta stats, such a thing has not happened in English football since 2003. The last time a corner less game played in English football was back in 1931 when Newcastle played Portsmouth without a ball being swung in or out from any of the four quadrants, but unlike Saturday’s goal glut the game ended goalless.
On the evidence of their last performance, Newcastle will stay up
After watching him play against Manchester United in the opening game, one might be forgiven to think that he was just another Michael Chopra-esque championship football who after having scored a fortune of goals in the championship, will struggle mightily in the top tier to glide the ball past some of the top goalkeepers in world of football. But just one game later and he is that after witnessing some great changes.
In only his second Premier League start Andy Carroll has silenced his critics emphatically with a hat-trick of highest class and that too against an opposition of Aston Villa’s class. Andy Carroll equalled his tally of goals that he accumulated in 23 previous Premier League outings in just one night as Newcastle united plundered an out of sorts Aston Villa.
Before the start of the season there were talks in all circles that how Newcastle and Blackpool will struggle for survival in the Premier League but after their opening day win against Wigan, Blackpool made their critics eat their words and so did Newcastle United but in a tad bit more emphatic manner and as long as Carroll continues in this manner they should have no worries in staying afloat the Premier League.
West Ham in turmoil
West Ham United succumbed to yet another defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers on Saturday but it was a game they might have won should Carlton Cole converted the spot kick when his side were dominating the possession and were in the ascendency. But it was not to be and for once more West Ham look to be in all sorts of bother with just two games into the season. They have already lost two of their opening fixtures of the season and with games against Manchester United and Chelsea coming up, things don’t look too bright for the Hammers, with the possibility of getting a single point on the board looking very bleak.
Kappa makes pathetic football kits
Dickson Etuhu’s chiselled torso may be the envy of many across the world but seeing it through the sweat-sodden football shirt was quite a turn off. According to kit manufacturers Kappa, the Fulham home kit is made up of excellent quality 83% Nylon and 17% Lycra is very sweat absorbent, a claim that still needs some vindication.
