ERG defeat Grants Farm in 2011 Bombardier Pacific Coast Open: 13-8 – Polo Update
The Men’s polo team of ERG displayed brilliant performance and thrashed Grants Farm in the classification match of the 2011 Bombardier Pacific Coast Open that took place at the Santa Barbara Polo Club in California.
Eight-goal handicap player of Grants Farm – Jeff Hall expressed his point of view after losing the game by five goals. He said that they were going to play against Grants Farm in next week therefore they passed through the match with much struggle. He added,
“We’re going to be facing this same team again on Sunday and we just wanted to get through today’s game without any injuries to horses or players. We did what we wanted to do today. We got some air in the horses and nobody got hurt. When Sunday rolls around,
we’ll be ready.”
It was a simple group match but team ERG was taking it very seriously in order to develop pressure over the opposite team for the future contest. They were suffering from a sense of failure after facing a heavy margin defeat in the hands of Lucchese. Amazingly,
they put in a good effort and every player of the foursome partook in the scoring to make the victory possible.
Nic Roldan did score the first goal of the game in the very early minutes and put Grants Farm ahead at the scorecard. It was the only offence from the two quartets, as ERG was trailing by one goal after the seven minutes of play.
Sebastian Merlos notched a couple of goals of which one was taken on penalty shot while other from the field. Furthermore, the ERG defenders kept Grants Farm at bay in the second period to establish their first lead in the game at 2-1.
In the third chukka, Merlos managed a hat-trick of goals while his team-mate Scott Wood added from the field effort and took the score up to six goals. From the other side, Roldan and Jeff Hall scored two and one goal respectively and made the game close
at 6-4.
The team ERG was not ready to slow down its action in the fourth frame. Roldan nailed in a goal for Grants Farm decreased the ERG edge down to a single goal. From the other side, Paco de Narvaez and Merlos added two and one goal respectively and expanded
the lead up to four goals.
In the fifth set of play, Roldan marked a couple of goals while Hall also added a single goal from the field to make the results close. Miguelito Torres was the only player served in the scoring in the seven minutes. A single field goal from Wood and a pair
of goals on penalty shots sealed the victory for ERG at 13-8.
