ESCO (Energy Service Com)?

from what i understood i was paying con ed( in nyc) now all of a sudden i see this esco thing added to my bill....no matter how hard ive tried to cut cost an save energy just seems the bill gets bigger....is esco manditory or something some one signs up for?

ps i live with my mother in law and shes not too bright so ...
