ESPN Star Sports secures SLPL broadcasting rights – Cricket News Update
Cricket Sri Lanka on Monday reached a multi-year agreement with ESPN Star Sports (ESS) on broadcasting rights for the coverage of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL).
The Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, Peter Hutton confirmed the deal signing with the Sri Lankan cricket board.
“We are delighted to be able to telecast the live matches of the SLPL in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and throughout the region,” said ESS MD Peter Hutton.
“It is an excellent addition to Star Cricket's remarkable catalogue of content in the next year. We look to further growing our live cricket content,” he added further.
As per agreement, ESS will broadcast a minimum of 24 T20 matches each season. ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket will all broadcast the matches from August 11, 2012. In addition to India and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Premier League matches will also be aired
in other markets like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Thailand-c3020.
SLC becomes the sixth cricket board with whom ESPN Star Sports has agreed to cover its domestic T20 league. The company already has the rights to existing T20 leagues from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 (Big Bash League),
ICC World T20 Championship (an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 flagship tournament), Champions League T20 (a joint venture of BCCI, CA and CSA).
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket has assured the integrity of the T20 League. SLC’s media manager, Ranjith Fernando told media persons on Sunday that the tournament will be conducted according to ICC’s Code of Conduct.
“Sri Lanka Cricket has taken all possible precautions to ensure that the franchisees are persons who would be mandated to adhere strictly to the guidelines laid down in order to have a successful tournament,” said Fernando yesterday. “In this whole process,
what has been fundamental to SLC is to maintain the integrity of the tournament and of the franchisees themselves,” he added further.
The inaugural edition of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Premier League, which gets underway on August 11, will see seven provincial teams competing in the tournament. The Champion team will also earn qualifier berth in the CLT20, to be held later this year. The tournament
will also feature 42 international players. BCCI has however, not allowed its players to take part in the Sri Lankan league
