ESPNHS honours Beau Hossler Jr. for his qualification for US Open at early age – Golf News
Beau Hossler Jr., who qualified for the US Open prior to turning 17, has been honoured by ESPNHS, along with 17 other players who were in their teen age.
They were honoured for being notable while performing in their respective fields, classrooms as well as for making major contributions to their communities.
Hossler was the only golfer selected among the 18 and the major reason of his selection was his qualification for the US Open at the age of 16.
Therefore, he was the youngest player in the 2011 US Open field to contend against the big names of the golfing world.
He was playing in the two-day event at the Oakmont Country Club in Arizona, where he shot a four-under 138 score to earn a trip to Congressional Country Club in Maryland.
It was the same week when the Racho Margarita, Calif., native completed his sophomore year while earning his driving licence as well.
"It was a good week," Hossler said. "I had been really busy right before that with school and finals, so that was a good little stress reliever".
When Hossler’s father, Beau Sr. came to know about his son’s qualification for the US Open, he looked surprised and said that he did not even imagine his son reaching that level.
According to him, Hossler was playing the sectional qualifier for the sake of experience. That is the reason why he was shocked and thrilled about the news.
Two weeks later, he was seen playing at Congressional and missed the cut with his 76-77 in the opening two rounds of the second major of the season.
However, he did not seem disappointed with his performance. In fact, it was his dream coming true to play in the event and meet his idol, Phil Mickelson, who treated him like he was a super star.
This was not the first time Hossler stunned his relatives and friends with his outstanding performance as he qualified for the 2009 US Amateur at Southern Hills when he was just 14.
His performance and ambitions at an early age speaks of his talent and courage to be a part of a pool of young super stars, such as Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day, who have already proved their mettle in the game of golf.
