  1. I saw this in the article, so it's ok by me.

"Sir Mark's rule would apply only to new cars. Eventually, old polluting cars would die quietly of their own accord. "

  2. Not a bad idea.  I live in the USA and I wouldn't mind seeing that.  A lot of people I know get large cars because they think they are safer.  With such a ban, in a few years there would be less and less bigger vehicles, with all getting smaller and therefore safer togather.

  3. they should i to am inspired to dump cars and make our world abetter place for our kids and our kids kids i hope everyone agrees with me

  4. the EU can ban whatever they like but they cant just strike off a car because of the companies that make them and the workforce would be immediately affected not to mention all the supply companies, they set targets for companies to achieve and a date for it to happen, it's already happening the CAA or "clean air act" is in force to reduce hydrocarbon emissions per day and it's also happening in the USA but with a different time scale and different level of hydrocarbon emissions, they are not as aggressive as the EU targets.

the main problem is the old cars on  street that do not comply with latest emission targets for new cars and in the states you dont need an MOT ever so there are some seriously awful cars driving around, there's almost no public transport in Detroit due to the "big 3" so everyone needs a some people can hardly afford anything, so if it gets you to work no matter how bad the car is it'll do

  5. Agree. All new cars manufactured should be more energy efficient. As the article states, old less energy efficient cars would die out.

I do not think this is going far enough though. I think the UK government should also tax existing less energy efficient vehicles more highly such as 4 x 4s. This could be gradually introduced in tranches, say cars 5 years old or under first.

Legislation to prevent the manufacture of inefficient cars would go a long way to reducing CO2 emissions. The road fund license charge should reflect environmental costs too. Perhaps scales or levels of payment. This would encourage people to buy a more energy efficient car in the future.

  6. I think not quite yet hydrogen cars are comming wait for them then all gas cars banned.

  7. I agree with ned 100%.  Let the free market decide what people want, and I assure you the free market will eliminate inefficient cars on it own.

There's no need to tax, the owners of inefficient cars are already paying their due through fuel cost.  I think most Americans just don't understand how expensive fuel is in Europe.  A few months ago, I put about 9 gallons of gas into a rental car in Germany, and it cost me roughly $75.  You must be nuts if you don't think that is deterrent enough from owning an inefficient car.  If I lived there, I certainly could not afford that, and would look for more efficient transportation methods on my own; government ban not required.

  8. I guess that would include rolls royce, jaguar, ferrari, aston martin, landrover, mercedes along with anything made in the USA.  I can't see that going down well with the public.

I think the European governments should just stick to talking a lot and doing very litttle.   That's worked fine in the past.

  9. So much for free markets. Why control what people buy? If they can afford it then let them buy what they want.  This is the same thing as censorship in music, movies and the arts.  If you want that then banning cars is the first step.

Bigger cars are safer by the way.  If a little car with less mass is hit by a bigger car with twice the mass the little car will be destroyed and the people killed so everyone should buy bigger cars.  I know sounds stupid why not make everyone buy little cars? Because Americans do not like little cars and our country is too big to drive little cars around unlike the little countries in Europe with a higher population density.

PS I Rented a Mercedes A class car and drove all around northern Europe and the car SUCKED. It could not get out of its own way and was a nuisance to drive on the highways.

Richard we all live in my world because the cars are all availible and bought everyday by people who drive them sorry.  Last time I was in Europe I noticed they are becoming popular there also so you tell me why the govt should dictate what people drive? Do you want the car manufacturers to go out of business? If so try to impliment this and millions will be out of work. I believe in feedomw ot the free market and the CHOICE to buy what I want to drive.

For the record I have a 83 honda accord and my work vehicle is a 6000 ilb cargo van. I am not a fan of SUVs but I believe people  can buy what they want sorry.

  10. Agree that all should take equal reponsibility for use/pollution of the commons. ie there is only so much planet to go around, and being rich should not entitle you to destroy it for others.

So if you want a gas guzzler, you should save elsewhere, eg smaller home, fewer flights, planting trees, building wind turbines.

    However,

the US would put yet more trade embarges on the EU through the WTO, which doen't allow discrimination on the grounds of environmental impact,

just as they did with bananas http://www.farmerslink.org.uk/bwto.htm

  11. I don't see the point.  We're going to use up all the oil.  Does it matter if we use it up at 5mpg or 500mpg?  The end result is the same.

  12. They should ban inefficient bureaucrats first.

  13. Imagine how expensive gasoline would be if we all lived in Ned's world! Yes, let's all buy a 7000 pound monster with seating for 9 to haul 1 person the majority of the time. I wonder how much GDP would be going to oil then.

Let's all be glad we don't live in Ned's world.

I don't think they should be banned, just taxed to the hilt. That tax revenue should go to clean technologies.
