EUROPA Cup Qualifiers – Besiktas vs. Vikingur – FULL TIME REPORT
Europa League was previously called the UEFA Cup when it started in 1971. There have been three teams who have been the most successful in this championship and they are Inter Milan, Juventus and the English club Liverpool as all three of them have won three cups a piece. Currently the champions of this cup are Athletico Madrid as they defeated the English underdogs Fulham to win it for the Spanish club.
Now the Europa League has started again after the final match played between Athletico Madrid and Fulham. Today the Turkish team Besiktas had to face the Faroe Island's club Vikingur. Both the teams started off well and both took their positions on the field to face each other in an action packed game. The match had to take place in Turkey at Besiktas' home ground in Istanbul.
When the match started, the Turkish club dominated the game and didn't let the Vikingurs retain ball posession. The Turkish club kept attacking from both flanks to help their team advance to the next round. Besiktas are the team that actually faced Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League and were able to defeat the English champions 1-0 at their "theatre of dreams," the Old Trafford.
With them going out of the UEFA Champions League, they competed in the Europa League and tried to find a place for themselves here so that they could win a trophy. Unfortunately, last year, they couldn't really achieve much success in the Europa League, but this year they were back to prove something to the world.
Besiktas recently became famous because of their amazing expensive signings such as Quaresma and the former Villareal forward Nihat Kahveci along with Guti of Real Madrid and Fanerbahce's amazing goal scorer Mert Nobre. Even though they have started playing good football because of these amazing and talented players, they are still highly criticized because they do not use the talent in their country and import talent from other countries to help their team win matches instead. The case is similar with teams such as the Spanish club Real Madrid and the newly bought English club, Manchester City.
With Besiktas having a lot of amazing talent, they did not really let the Finland club make a big deal out of the tie. With the match being played at their home and with amazing fan support, Besiktas were able to defeat the other team easily. With the new Portuguese signing Quaresma missing out penalty kick, the other strikers Nihat Kahveci and Mert Nobre were able to score goals for the Turkish club to help them win the match.
The Turkish club started off without their number 1 Goalkeeper and gave Hakan Arikan a chance. With him standing between the two poles, Tomas Sivok and Tabata were standing inside the box to assist him in the defensive lines. The current number 7, Quaresma was playing as a proper winger for the club and he helped the team advance to the next round as all the moves were made from the right flank as he was the one who was playing on the right wing to help his team from that side.
Nihat Kahveci was able to score an early goal in the 19th minute as the team left for the stands with a 1-0 lead over the Finland club. When the match started again in the second half, Quaresma continued adding pressure from the right flank as Nihat was able to score a second goal, but this time from his foot and not his head. During the 83rd minute Nihat was substituted and Mert Nobre came on. As soon as the new player took his position, he was given a wonderful header inside the 18 yard box which he just couldn't resist and headed it inside the goal to give himself a 3 goal lead.
The match ended 3-0 for the Turkish team as they advanced to the next round without any pressure on them. The Vikingurs played their best 11 including their goalkeeper Geza Turi along with their main man Salvi Vatinhammar. Even though Hans Djurhuus was the man who was supposed to cover Delgado on the right flank; Delgado made his presence felt as he kept on making great runs on the right with Quaresma to help his team take an easy win.
