  1. Do not buy traveler cheques!

They cost you when you buy them, your will have to pay extra to get them in Euros or Swiss franks, and often they cost you again when you want to use them. And if you have any left over at the end of your journey, you will have to pay again to get your money when back home.

There are not many places left that accept traveler cheques, so you will either have to travel to the main branch office of a bank in the center of town in office hours, or you will have to use one of the few other places that accept them but at a fee.

Best is to put your money in a bank account and use a bank card in an ATM. Yes, you will pay a fee, but most likely less than any of the fees the traveler cheques company charges you.

If you have a credit card, bring it.

If you use it for higher bills you will not pay extra fees, only a modest one because of using it abroad.

If your money is still in the bank it is as safe, or safer, as when you buy traveler cheques.

Just be careful with your cards and bring the telephone number for when you have to block them, and write down the numbers of your cards.

For things to pack, in October and November Switzerland in the mountains can be cold. If you are from Australia you will need to bring your warm gear and expect to buy some more warm clothing when there. (In OZ you can not really get warm winter clothing for skiing in Europe.)

Bring layers, long sleeved shirts, sweaters, jeans, leggings or thin pyamas for under jeans, thick socks and mountain boots.

Language will not be much of a problem, as most Swiss will understand English, but try to learn the niceties like 'thanks', 'good morning' and 'good bye' in the local language where you are, either German or French I think, so you can be polite. They will appreciate that a lot.

  2. well if u exchange your australian dollars to euro you will lose a lot of money because euro has more power than dollar so u must exchange money only in that country you go but a suggestion Do NOT come to Greece u will spend all your money to noting:)

  3. The best rate for money conversion is your credit card or bank card.  Use a credit card for most of your purchases.  Traveler's checks are more for safety than for a good rate on exchange.  Before you leave home, you can purchase checks that are already in Euro--that's the way to go, I think.  Also put some cash in your checking account and take your ATM card.  This is a great way to get cash on a daily basis.

I like to have my money purchases done before I leave home because it saves on hassle.  I have a credit card, ATM card, traveler's checks, and some Euro too (about 50-100 in Euro).  I like to have cash on hand in advance because it may not be convenient to cash in a traveler's check when you first get there.
