  1. European dobermans bark with a stupid accent:

    "Le woof, le woof"

  2. Yes, there are differences.

It is said the American bred Dobermans have a higher occurrence of DCM.

Euro Dobes are larger all around. Thicker heads & necks, deeper & broader chests. The American breds (some have very nice fronts), have more slender, longer arched necks.

    European: http://www.brittonfarmsdobermans.com/

ADD: Diane, German Pinschers, Black and Tan Terriers, Weimaraners, Greyhounds, and the German Shorthair Pointers all contributed to his early breed stock.

  3. I dont know alot about Dobes.. I will star this tho, as there are a few Dobe people on here who could answer this better.

All I can think of is that maybe one bloodline may have a thicker body, while the other may be more fine-boned?  They would still be the same breed tho.

In my breed, Chinese Crested..  the Eurpoean lines tend to be more cobby, with a thicker body and structure, while the American lines tend to be more fine-boned and delicate in appearance.

  4. Most notably, a Doberman from Europe is likely to have natural ears and a long tail, because cropping/docking is illegal in most countries in Europe.

Breed trends and styles are somewhat different...generally speaking, European Dobes are more likely to have a stockier body type, not as long, lean and "graceful" as some American Dobes may be.

There really shouldn't be MUCH more of a difference than that.  The breed standards are similar in all countries.  Good breeders adhere to the standard and don't breed for "extremes".  The Dobe is supposed to be a square dog of medium build.

I have noticed a trend among BYBs in the US to breed huge, oversized Dobermans and call them "German-style" and charge more money for them.  Don't fall for this trick- it's nothing more than bad breeding practices.

  5. There is no difference. Just as an "American Rottweiler" and "German Rottweiler" ARE THE SAME THING. (the birth place may be different, a German import, or a dog born in the U.S.)  Ignorant people think there are differences, but there are not.... there are not two separate breed standards for an American Rottweiler and a German Rottweiler as there is for an English Cocker Spaniel and an American Cocker Spaniel.... or a Welsh Corgi or a Pembroke Corgi.

This is probably the same thing... I've never heard of an European Dobie...but I could be wrong... I just know in Rotties people want to say that the "German Rottweiler" is shorter, stockier, darker in color, bigger heads... and the American Rottweiler is taller,, thinner, with bigger ears. There is no such thing as an German Rottweiler or American Rottweiler.

  6. Simply put, European Dobmerman breeders focus more on the workability of the breed while American breeders focus on breeding a good family pet. Appearance wise, Euro Dobermans are generally more stocky and muscular while American Dobermans tend to be lean and more slender.

  7. The European dogs aren't a bigger dog, they are both supposed to be the same height. The European dogs have more bone and substance. They tend to be a stronger looking dog, where the N. American dogs tend to be a leaner flashy angulated dog. I tend towards the European dogs. I like the fact that they have a more stable temperament. They are a nice solid dog, and they have more workability than the N.American dogs.

They SHOULD look and act the same, and in most aspects of the dog they are very much the same. I just like the more stable European temperament, not skittish. I also like the strong look, rather than the  ' fine ' dogs of N. America. And while DCM is found in the Doberman, the N. American lines tend to have a whole lot more of it. The Europeans seem to care more about what they produce, taking care to keep the Doberman the dog it was meant to be. Where the N. Americans like to make their dogs big, long and over angulated.

  8. I have had a few Doberman Pinschers(spelling).  According to my research of the breed,  Doberman's are a hybrid breed.  They originated in Germany.  It took 3 purebreds to create the doberman breed: a Rottweiler, a German Pinscher and a German Shepherd.  (If I remember correctly without dragging out my book).   Both Doberman's I had made wonderful family members.  Did you know that alot of Doberman's smile??  It's true.  My last Doberman lived 14 1/2 years.  I miss both of them dearly.

  9. European Dobermans are bigger both taller and heavier than their American counterpart. They have a more blocky head and shorter faces. They also tend to have less of a distinction in color especially in the markings. American dobermans that are red or black will have stricking markings with strong definition (whether it be rust or tan). European markings are usually closer to the original color especially in the red. I prefer the American doberman becuase they (my opinion) are more sleek and regal looking...Here are some pictures...

Just look at the pictures...this family imports the European Dobermans in the US.
