Question:

EXPLAIN THE 10 SPEEDS OF A BIKE.?

After many many years of not riding bike I'm trying one more time. Someone please explain the gears and when I should change gears. I will be starting on surfaces that are mostly flat and will try hilly surfaces when I am confident that I am able to handle them. Thanks

  1. You should pick a gear so that you are pedaling at 70 to 90 rpms.  If you are starting to pedal slower switch to a lower gear.  If it's too easy go to a higher gear.

  2. Gears are simply there so you can maintain a comfortable cadence (measured in the number of pedal revolutions per minute). Of course this depends on your riding style and how strong you are.

Going uphill, you will want to use a lower gear (one of the larger rear sprockets) and when going downhill or building up speed you will want to use a higher gear (smaller sprocket)

10 speeds means that there is 10 different gear ratios you can choose from (well could potentially have 30, depending on how many chainrings you have)

  3. Well... Gears are personal, I cruise town in 3-7, my buddies 2-5,  avoid using gears such as 1-5 or 2-1 and just get your own style on gear choice, Another big thing is rythm, to go the fastest with the least energy get a set rpm and keep it in there using your gears to control it.
