I know that Ea is a god in the city of Shurrupak. Ea's warning to the man, I think Gilgamesh (right?), to build a boat to escape the great flood. How does Ea know the man? And what oath does he have to the man??

  1. Ea is the Akkadian name of the Sumerian god Enki, a god of underground fresh water and of wisdom.

Ea warned Ut-napishtim, not Gilgamesh, of the coming flood. We are not told why. See references below to variant versions of this story. The flood hero is variously called Ut-napishtim, Siusudra, and Atrahasis.

Enki/Ea is always the god who acts against Enlil, the god who orders the flood, by warning the flood hero. We are never told how Enki/Ea knows the hero. Since Enki/Ea is a god, we probably don’t need to be told. Nor is there any oath.
