Each game ups pressure on Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert to perform – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey has backed second-year quarterback Blaine Gabbert to bounce back strongly on the worst-ever 53-yard game against the Houston Texans, who have only a year of experience playing into the playoffs of the National Football
League (NFL).
Mike has insisted that a game’s record should not dictate Blaine’s future and that it is the best opportunity, and probably the last one, for him to come out of the gloomy phase.
He said it is a now-or-never situation in front of the quarterback and if he fails again he will certainly have to settle down for a backup role with or without Jaguars in the longer run.
The coach is particularly not happy with the level of inconsistency the offence leader has shown since the start of the preseason and then in the season. He, for example, had an impressive start to the regular season but the next game proved a complete performance
disaster for him.
Blaine had been quick to snub commentators in the preseason for having kept tracking his performance since the start of his pro career, and especially discarding his ability to perform better most of the time. He as a matter fact lashed out at such opinion
makers after performing well in a pair of appearances in this preseason.
His latest numbers, however, have made him speechless. He is unable to find and boast an answer to his woes and with passage of each game pressure on him to perform is increasing.
Still, some pundits stand by their earlier stance that the quarterback is less likely to achieve consistency in his form and unless and until he does so the Jaguars must be ready to suffer on the field.
Apparently, new owner Shahid Khan and general manager Gene Smith are backing the quarterback, which could be down on the fact that the coach had expressed confidence into the quarterback’s abilities when he joined the team as head coach.
It is not certain that the top brasses are going to be on the side of the coach in the longer run, especially if he continues to persist with Blaine while the player continues to show shaky side of his skills.
This is exactly what former coach Del Rio had done last year, hoping for a comeback from Blaine which never happened and at the end the coach departed from Jacksonville unceremoniously.
So it will be difficult for the quarterback to enjoy the same level of support from the coach as he does now if he does not perform well.
