My son has just moved up in rank to 2nd class from tenderfoot. This summer there are several Eagle Scout requirment prgrams being offered. Can he start working on them now or does he need to wait until he is higher in rank.? He currently has 2 badges and the handbook says he needs to have at least 10 to complete the eagle scout reqirements. Am I understanding this right or what?

  1. Hello Streaker:

If your summer camp is like most, your son's Scoutmaster or camp director may suggest that boys who have not yet earned the First Class rank use the time at camp to fulfill the requirements for First Class. Summer camp should be fun for your son so that he want to return next year. He has lots of time to work on merit badges next year. Unless your son is highly motivated and desires to work all day on advancement, it would benefit his experience to schedule First Class requirement classes for part of the day, and then schedule time to swim, boat, wade in the creek, look for crawdads, chase butterflies, shoot arrows, maybe ride a horse, birdwatch, hike, run, climb, yell, and just have fun.

The Eagle rank requirements include at least two years' service, 21 merit badges, tenure as a youth leader, a community service project. He will earn Star, and then Life prior to Eagle. It should be a fun, memorable experience, not a race against a clock, or being pushed at the end of a stick.

    Keep on Scoutin'

  2. To get that rank your son needs to some vol. work like at schools chruches to some work there and many others and should hit the Eagle scout the best of luck to him.

    god bless

  3. I am pretty sure he can work on them now. He has to make Eagle before he turns 18. My son is working on his and he is only a Tenderfoot.

  4. He needs the merit badges before he starts his project or recive them during the starting of it
