Eagle on Tomic: “I think this year has been a big learning curve for Bernie and his team” – Tennis News
Josh Eagle who is coaching the likes of the national number one, Marinko Matosevic, spoke to the problems of his fellow Queenslander, Bernard Tomic, with one of the most successful tennis player in the world, Roger Federer, during
the Association of Tennis Professional Tour of Basel. The gist of the discussion was portrayed by the coach as one of the biggest dilemma of the new generation. Everyone in the Aussie ranks wants the 20-year-old to perform at his best but they forget the fact
that he is just too young to absorb pressure and escape the guile of their superior athletes.
It is highly unlikely for Tomic to perform at his best all the time because he is still learning a lot of traits and facing a downfall in the form which can happen to any player at any stage of his career. People should ease pressure
on him so that he can perform well and produce desirable results. The tags of ‘disgraceful’ and police inquiries will ruin the image of the national hero who is the most potential candidate to carry the flag of tennis in Australia.
Eagle stated, “I think this year has been a big learning curve for Bernie and his team. It was always going to be tough to back up what he achieved in 2011, especially the Wimbledon [quarter-final] result. Let's hope he can use
this off-season to regroup and dissect where he can improve and what needs to be done to reach his potential. Nobody doubts his talent - this is off the charts, some shots he can hit are simply incredible. But at the top level of any sport it takes more than
just talent to succeed. Bernie has to learn from the champions of our sport.”
Tomic has just won 29 matches and faced 27 losses in the entire season of 2012. He performed well at the start; reached the fourth round of the Australian Open at Melbourne before being hammered away by the 17-time Grand Slam Champion,
Roger Federer. It was always difficult for the 20-year-old kid to reproduce a similar year as 2011 where he reached the quarter-final of the Wimbledon Championships. The rehabilitation will take time and everyone should expect less so that he can play better.
