Eamon Sullivan gets back into the pool to regain his 100m freestyle title – Swimming News
Former world record holder of 100m freestyle and Australian expert, Eamon Sullivan leaps back into the pool to regain his lost 100m freestyle title.
The 26-year-old Sullivan, who lost his national title from James Magnussen earlier this year, has claimed that he will learn from his mistakes. Sullivan suffered a fracture in his heel, which disrupted his training program and he lost his individual 100m freestyle berth for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
The Australian only managed to secure a spot in the Australian 4*100m freestyle relay, which occupied the gold medal at these world titles. He also won the silver medal of 100m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and accomplished a bronze medal in the 100m event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
With the comeback of former 400m freestyle champion, Australia’s Ian Thorpe, the competition is getting stronger for 100m freestyle as Thorpe claimed that he will target shorter freestyle distances to obtain his Olympic qualification spot.
On the other hand, Sullivan has expressed his desire to take the benefit of the situation, as with Magnussen being the number one Australian 100m swimmer, he is able to find more privacy for his training schedule.
“People have said Maggie becoming world champion must be huge motivation for me. Leading into worlds and not having an individual spot, I was as motivated as I need to be, to make sure next year I can swim as well as I can,” Sullivan added.
The 26-year-old also said that he has not thought of retiring from swimming, saying, “There is no reason to hang up the Speedos.”
He said that he is thinking of giving more attention to 50m freestyle instead of the 100m event. Sullivan is headed to Stockholm to take part in the second leg of Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 Swimming World Cup.
Sullivan will take part in the three European legs of the World Cup and then at the fifth stop of series in Singapore from November 4-5, where he will face Thorpe in the 100m freestyle.
