Eamon Sullivan looking forward to improve his 100m freestyle pace – Swimming News
Former world record holder, Eamon Sullivan is looking forward to improve his 100m freestyle pace for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Trials.
Sullivan suffered a heel fracture few months earlier, which put a halt on his training program and he started clocking inconsistent timings. Subsequently, 26-year-old Sullivan lost his national title from James Magnussen at the Australian Nationals, earlier
this year. He also failed to confirm his spot in the individual 100m freestyle event and competed in the 4*100m freestyle only at the 2011 World Championships.
Nevertheless, with the return of former Australian champion, Ian Thorpe, the competition is growing stiffer, as Thorpe has expressed his desire of qualifying to the 2012 Olympics in the 100m freestyle event.
Sullivan won a silver medal in 100m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and then a bronze in the same at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. His contribution in the 4*100m freestyle at these world titles enabled Australian team to capture gold medal of the respective
event.
Sullivan seems contented with his downfall, saying his defeat has given him a chance to learn and improve his swimming. The former 100m freestyle champion expressed that he does not get disappointed after losing his title instead it has made him strong to
achieve a bigger goal at the next year Olympics.
“People have said Maggie becoming world champion must be huge motivation for me. Leading into worlds and not having an individual spot, I was as motivated as I need to be, to make sure next year I can swim as well as I can. But it's probably a good thing,
seeing Maggie swim well. It takes a bit of pressure off me and I can work away in the background and just focus on what I need to do,” Sullivan said.
The Australian veteran is preparing hard to give a mettle response to the upcoming 100m freestyle battle with Magnussen and Thorpe.
In addition, Magnussen is also scheduled to take part in the Singapore leg of the 2011 Swimming World Cup on November 4-5, where he will face Thorpe in the 100m freestyle discipline.
